Wait for a man who....and other unfathomable twists of fate


Wait for a man who calls you beautiful no matter what you look like
Wait for a man who looks deeply into your eyes as though he's trying
to remember every little detail
Wait for a man for a man who kisses your forehead, the top of your head
and pulls your hand close to his heart
Wait for a man who makes you feel safe, warm, comfortable, treasured
Wait for a man who holds you close,
so close you forget everything you were worrying about
before his arms were wrapped around you
and he was holding you tightly against his chest
who strokes your hair and face so slowly
like he has nowhere else to be....forever
whose eyes close gently when he's close to you
because the feelings overwhelm
Wait for a man who makes you smile and laugh until your smile muscles are sore
and you wonder why you never smiled like this before

who says he's thinking of you even five minutes after you were together
who asks if you are home okay
after you left him
who takes you to watch the sunset after you mentioned you loved to
Wait for a man you don't fantasize about because at the end of the day
the reality is so much better than the fantasy
who asks you how your day has been,
who listens, responds, and offers support
Wait for a man who hugs you and hugs you and sometimes the hugs linger
and hugs you until the tiny little parts of your heart and mind
and some of the broken parts, the shattered pieces start to come together,
to fill in, to heal, and that was just his hug
Wait for a man who, while saying goodbye, he holds you close to him, tightly,
until you forget everything on your mind
and in that peace, that safety, that comfort, you feel something you can't describe
because you've never felt it before - it surprised you,
it makes you shiver, it makes you feel tightness in your throat
like you might cry and you have no idea why
and you think all this and it was just a hug
Wait for a man who makes you lose complete interest
in maintaining your carefully established walls,
who you say things to you promised you'd never say
who you can't even wonder about holding back from
because you don't have the energy or the interest
and you've already forgotten why you should
who holds you tightly when you cry,
who laughs with you and makes you laugh,
who listens as you talk, just listens,
and after all of that,
you can't deny that sitting close and looking into his eyes
you're suddenly able to see yourself clearly the way
you haven't been able to in a really long time
